The most significant urban development of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.

The home of the athletes during the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games is a symbol of the regeneration of the city’s urban coastline and industrial land. The Olympic Village was built due to the need to create a residential space for the athletes participating in Barcelona ’92, but its goals were even more ambitious: this urban renewal project gave the city not only a modern residential neighbourhood but also new beaches, large gardened areas and public facilities.

Why visit the Olympic Village?

The Olympic Village was built in the old and dilapidated industrial zone of Poblenou. The aim was to build a residential district for the athletes who were to participate in the 1992 Olympic Games, while at the same time recovering the seafront and creating green spaces and recreational areas.

It was designed by a team of architects led by Oriol Bohigas, Josep Martorell, David Mackay and Albert Puigdomènech, who implemented a major urban development which gave rise to the Olympic Port and Port Olímpic Parkthe Nova Icària beach, and an entire spacious district that is not only on the seafront, but also full of green areas.

Apart from some tall chimneys that echo the district’s industrial past, the skyline is dominated by the Torre Mapfre and Hotel Arts. The initial project contemplated the construction of four skyscrapers, but coastal regulations only allowed two to be built. In addition to the sports and leisure zone of the Olympic Port, the renovated facilities of some old military barracks are home to one of the campuses of Pompeu Fabra University. The university library occupies the singular Dipòsit de les Aigües building, a transformed water tank that used to supply the fountain of the neighbouring Ciutadella Park.

For the most curious of you

  • Did you know? The Olympic Village respects the population density initially stipulated in the Cerdà Plan, something that the Eixample was not able to achieve.
  • Local’s tip: Due to its wide streets, parks and proximity of the beach, the Olympic Village is one of the best areas for all kinds of sports, not just aquatic ones, especially cycling, jogging and skating.
  • A must: To see the legacy of the Olympic Games.

  • 5 star ratingGreat activity with kids Our kids 11 & 13 had a great 2 hours with Tom our guide. It was easy to learn and we went to places the hop on hop off bus didn’t go. Well worth the 49 euros each. I would recommend doing it early in morning(they open at 20) as there are fewer people to navigate around.

  • 5 star ratingPrivate segway for 4 What a great experience! Our leader Oscar took time prepare us before taking us (50 year old segway virgins) on the streets. He gave us rest stops to share some history, humor and card tricks. Just enough, because who are we kidding, we were there to ride! He took lots of great groups photos at many different spots. It was a memorable experience and 2 hours flew by fast... » Read More

  • 5 star ratingExcellent way to explore Barcelona! We went on the Gaudi’s works tour (2.5 hours) and can’t recommend it enough!

Adrian, our guide was excellent - very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful (especially with taking photos!).

The tour covers a lot of the artistic work of Gaudi and we found it very interesting and well worth the trip. We went on a Sunday which was definitely advantageous as the streets were much quieter.

  • 5 star ratingSimply excellent Highly recommend this tour for families with teens! We did a 2 hour tour and had a fantastic time. We were shown how to use the segways and then we set off for an informative trip around the park and beaches. Our tour guide was Rut and she was delightful (and very patient).

  • 5 star ratingSee Barcelona on Segway My husband and I had already tried Segway on a previous trip and liked it so thought arranging a 3 hour tour in Barcelona would be a good way of covering this amazing city. We were not disappointed. We were able to book at fairly short notice the trip we wanted at the time we wanted. They had good training facilities for the inexperienced. Our guide took us both on... » Read More
